Lake Zurich

boat, a popular pastime on the lake]] Lake Zurich (also spelled Lake Zürich or Lake of Zürich; in German ''Zürichsee'') is a lake in Switzerland, extending southeast of the town of Zürich. It is locally known as ''Zürisee''. Geographically, Lake Zürich is located in the southwestern part of the canton of Zürich. To the east of the lake are two minor lakes, Lake Greifen and Lake Pfäffikon. It is formed by the river Linth, which, rising in the glaciers of the Tödi Range in Glarus, was diverted by the Escher canal (completed in 1811) into the Lake Walen, whence, by means of the Linth canal (completed in 1816), its waters are carried to the east end of the lake of Zürich. This river issues from the lake at its north-west end, passing through the town of Zürich, but is then called the Limmat. ]] No streams of importance flow into the lake. Its area is about 90.1 km² (34 sq. m.), its extreme length 40 km (25 m.), its greatest breadth 2 m., and its greatest depth 143 m (469 ft.), while its surface is 406 m (1342 ft.) above sea-level. Its volume is 3'900 mio m³. It is included, or the greater portion, in the Canton of Zürich, but at its east end 8 sq. m. towards the southern shore are in that of Schwyz, and 4 sq. m. towards its northern shore in that of St. Gallen. The great dam of masonry (the Seedamm), carrying the railway line and road from Rapperswil to Pfäffikon, which cuts off the extreme eastern part of the lake from the rest, is passed only by small boats; steamers (of which the first was placed on the lake in 1835) do not go beyond the dam, as the eastern portion of the lake is shallow and choked by weeds. The eastern section of the lake is known as the Obersee, German for "upper sea". West of this dam lie the small islands of Lützelau and Ufenau, where in 1523 Ulrich von Hutten took refuge and died. Both shores are well cultivated and fertile. The only three nodal points are Zürich, Pfäffikon SZ and Rapperswil. Beyond Bürkliplatz

2|- m seems like a weird dimension... methinks this is a scanned in document From where I'm accessing this at... I see a "missing image" for the picture of the lake. Reuploading it was a move resulting in failure. Odd. --DF08 18:00, Jul 18, 2004 (UTC)

ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich (from its German name ''Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich'', ETHZ) is the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, Switzerland. It is commonly called the ''ETH'' or the ''Poly'' after its original name ''Polytechnikum''. The ETH is considered by many one of Europe's premier universities in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science. It is a member of the IDEA League.

History

The ETH was founded in 1854 by the Swiss Confederation and opened its doors in 1855 as a polytechnic institute (''Eidgenössische Polytechnische Schule''). It comprised in the beginning six departements: architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, forestry, and a catch-all departement for mathematics, natural sciences, literature, and social and political sciences. The ETH is a ''federal'' institute (i.e., under direct administration by the Swiss government), whereas the University of Zürich (founded in 1833) is a ''cantonal'' institution. The decision for a new federal university was heavily disputed at the time. In the beginning, both universities were co–located in the buildings of the University of Zürich. The main building of the ETH was built 1861 to 1864 under Gustav Zeuner; the architect was Gottfried Semper, who was a professor for architecture at the ETH at the time. The south wing of the building was allocated to the University of Zürich until the university's own new main building was constructed (1912 – 1914). At about the same time, Semper's ETH building was enlarged and also got its impressive cupola. In 1909, the course program of the ETH was restructured to that of a real university, from its early, very schoolish agenda, and the ETH was granted the right to award doctorates. In 1911, it was given its current name, ''Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule''. In 1924, another reorganization structured the university in 12 departments. With a new law
