Laboratory

thumb|right|320px|Biochemistry laboratory at the University of Cologne. A laboratory (often abbreviated lab) is a place where scientific research and experiments are conducted. A lab can hold space for one to thirty, or more, researchers depending on the size of the room and state mandated maximum occupancy limit. All laboratories share some common features, mainly Laboratory equipment and Laboratory glassware: Usually, they have at least one fume hood. Toxic and hazardous chemicals can be safely handled in a fume hood. This reduces, and usually eliminates, the risk of inhalation of toxic gases produced by the reaction of chemicals. Laboratories usually have a sink for handwashing. A fire extinguisher is located in a laboratory, as well as a fire blanket, to help exterminate fire in the event of an accident. There is also an eye wash station and an overhead shower in the event that chemicals gain access onto clothes, skin, or eyes. Supporting the laboratory is usually a stock room, or preperation room, where dry and wet chemicals are stored. This stockroom prepares all the reagents (acids, bases, buffers) of various quantities and concentrations, as well as orders and distributes supplies (glassware, chemicals, personal protective equipment) to the laboratory. When researchers perform experiments in the laboratory they use pure phases and sterile reagents. Impure chemicals undergo purification first, then are used in an experiment; non-sterile reagents are first autoclaved before use. Impure, and non sterile reagents interfere with experiments causing undesired results. The equipment and orientation of a laboratory will ultimately depend on its purpose. University laboratories, as well as chemistry and biochemistry laboratories will contain myriad glassware. In these laboratories, general experiments will be performed to isolate or purify compounds, or perform research to gain new knowledge on a given compound or scientific idea. Other common laboratory

Ames Laboratory

Ames Laboratory is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory located in Ames, Iowa. Compared to most other DOE laboratories, it is small, employing about 500 people. It is located on the campus of Iowa State University.

History

The lab was started as part of the Manhattan Project. Its purpose was to produce high purity uranium from uranium ores. Frank Spedding lead the effort to develop the thermite process for this purpose. Most of the uranium used in the first self sustaining nuclear reaction at the University of Chicago was provided by this project. Category:U.S. National Labs Category:Manhattan Project

Laboratory Glassware

Laboratory glassware refers to a variety of equipment, traditionally made of glass, used for scientific experiments in chemistry and biology. Some of the equipment is now made of plastic for cost and convenience reasons, but glass is still used for some applications because it is relatively inert, transparent, and relatively easy to customize. Borosilicate glasses such as Pyrex are often used because they are less subject to thermal stress. For some applications quartz is used for its ability to withstand high temperatures or its transparency in certain parts of the electromagnetic spectrum. Special-purpose materials are also used; for example, hydrofluoric acid is stored and used in containers made of wax or polymer because it attacks glass. Most laboratory glassware is now mass-produced, but most large laboratories employ a glass blower to construct specialized pieces. This construction forms a specialized field of glassblowing requiring precise control of shape and volume. Laboratory glassware includes:
  • test tubes
  • Erlenmeyer flasks
  • Florence flasks
  • beakers
  • Petri dishes
  • Watch glasses
  • graduated cylinders
  • pipettes
  • cuvettes
  • burettes
  • gas syringes
  • conical measures

    Dexter'S Laboratory

''Dexter's Laboratory'' (''Dexter's Lab'' for short) is an American animated series which was created by Genndy Tartakovsky and first produced by Hanna-Barbera for Cartoon Network. Craig McCracken also worked on some episodes. The original pilot appeared as an episode of the series ''What-A-Cartoon!'', featuring various cartoon shorts, and a series soon followed, the first of Cartoon Network's original shows. The premise of the cartoon involves a short child genius named Dexter (originally voiced by Christine Cavanaugh, later Candi Milo), who has a secret laboratory connected to his bedroom. He is almost constantly in conflict with his ditzy, obnoxious older sister, Dee Dee. Dexter's arch-nemesis is Mandark (voiced by Eddie Deezen), another child genius with an unusual evil laugh ("A-ha-ha! A-ha-ha-ha-ha!"). Often Mandark, through fraud or rarely by coincidence, gets credit for Dexter's achievements. Mandark is also in love with Dee Dee. Also appearing regularly in the series are Dexter's mom and dad. There is little sense of continuity between episodes. In addition to the series there is an hour-long special entitled ''Ego Trip'', in which Dexter travels through time and meets several of his future selves. ''Ego Trip'' was originally supposed to conclude the series, but two additional seasons followed. The times of ''Ego Trip'' are 2000 (the year of Dexter's episodes), 2037, 2055 and 2070.

    Characters

  • Dexter - the central protagonist, creator and owner of the laboratory; red-haired. He speaks with an Eastern European or German accent which is not explained, as none of the other members of his family do. He considers his sister Dee Dee to be stupid and inferior, not to mention clumsy. He calls his parents by "Mother" and "Father" on occasion.
  • Dee Dee - Dexter's blond-haired older sister. Loves ballet, dolls, ponies, unicorns and messing around in Dexter's laboratory. She is two to three times taller than Dexter
