Zalman Schachter-Shalomi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi (born Zalman Schachter, 1924) is a rabbi in the Jewish Renewal movement. He became a rabbi through Chabad (Lubavitch), a part of Hasidic Judaism, which itself is a part of Orthodox Judaism.
Over the years his teachings became more and more liberal, and he eventually left Orthodox Judaism altogether. He no longer views halakha (traditional Jewish law) to be normative, and his views on halakha are now closer to what is taught in Reform Judaism or Reconstructionist Judaism.
He maintains a great interest in Kabbalah (esoteric Jewish mysticism), and ecology and environmental ethics. He is considered an extremely controversial figure within the Jewish community, especially for his views on sexuality and Jewish practice. Although he privately ordains his students as rabbis, no mainsream denomination of Judaism (Orthodox, Conservative or Reform) recognizes his students as rabbis, and most Orthodox Jews no longer regard him as a rabbinic authority.
Schachter-Shalomi's approach to Judaism is a synthesis of Chabad/Lubavitch and contemporary New Age spirituality, the latter including such disparate influences as the literature of psychedelics, transpersonal psychology, and James Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis. His innovations in Jewish worship (not limited to the Jewish Renewal community) include chanting prayers in English while retaining the traditional Hebrew cantillation, engaging worshippers in theological dialogue, and the introduction of spontaneous movement and dance. In recent years, he has pioneered the practice of "spiritual eldering," working with fellow seniors on coming to terms with aging and training them as spiritual mentors for younger adults.
Works
Schachter-Shalomi has produced a large body of articles, books and cassette recordings. His free-association homiletic style, typical of Hasidic-trained rabbis, and his frequent use of New Age and computer jargon can be a challenge for the first-time reader. His publications
Shneur Zalman Of Liadi (1745-1812) founder of Chabad Lubavitch and author of Tanya and Shulchan Aruch HaRav.]]
Shneur Zalman of Liadi (or Reb Schneur Zalman or Baal HaTanya or Alter Rebbe ("Old Rebbe" in Yiddish) or The Rav), (Liadi was a small town in imperial Russia), (1745-1812), was an Orthodox Judaism rabbi and was the founder and first Rebbe of Chabad Lubavitch that is part of Hasidic Judaism. Shneur Zalman was a descendant of the mystic and philosopher Rabbi Judah Loew (known as the "Maharal of Prague"). The movement he founded was moved to the town of Lubavitch in present-day Belarus by his son and successor Rabbi Dovber Schneersohn. In 1940 the Chabad Lubavitch movement moved its headquarters to Brooklyn, New York in the United States with branches all over the world staffed by its own Lubavitch-trained, and ordained, rabbis with their wives and children.
Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi was a prominent disciple of Rabbi Dovber of Mezeritch, the "Great Maggid" who was in turn a major disciple of the founder of Hasidism Rabbi Israel ben Eliezer known as the Baal Shem Tov ("Master of the Good Name"). After the death of Rabbi Dovber of Mezeritch, his sudents dispersed over Europe. Rabbi Shneur Zalman became the leader of Hasidism in Lithuania, and is accepted as one of the great Hasidic leaders. He involved himself in opposing Napoleon's advance on Russia and supporting the Jewish settlements in the Land of Israel, then under the control of the Ottoman Empire. He was imprisoned by the Czar on charges of supporting the Ottoman Empire, since he advocated sending charity to the Ottoman territory of Palestine. The day of his acquittal and release, the 19th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar, is celebrated as the "Hasidic New Year" by Lubavitch Hasidim, who have a festive meal and communal pledges to learn the whole of the Talmud known as "Chalukat Ha'Shas."
Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi is well known for his systematic exposition of Hasidic Jewish philosophy,
