The Cardigans The Cardigans are a Swedish indie/pop band that formed in 1992. They remain best-known for their breakthrough album, ''Life'' (1995) and hit singles including "Lovefool", known as the title track in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet.
Peter Svensson and Magnus Sveningsson, both heavy metal musicians, formed the group in 1992 in Jönköping, Sweden, with drummer Bengt Lagerberg, keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson and lead singer Nina Persson. Living together in a small apartment, The Cardigans recorded a demo tape which record producer Tore Johansson heard, leading to an invitation to record at a studio in Malmö. Their debut album was ''Emmerdale'' (1994), which includes the Swedish radio hit "Rise & Shine". The album was later voted the best of 1994 by a readers poll in ''Slitz'' magazine.
The rest of 1994 was spent touring Europe and recording ''Life'', which was released in 1995. ''Life'' became an international success, selling more than a million copies worldwide and achieving platinum status in Japan. They were signed to Mercury Records thereafter, and released ''First Band on the Moon'' in 1996. It represented a marked departure from previous works, including more unusual accompaniment and lyrics with violent themes. "Lovefool" was a hit across the globe, especially in the United States and again in Japan, where the album reached platinum in only three weeks.
They released an album following ''First Band on the Moon'' called ''The Other Side of the Moon'', which contained their B-side tracks, some of which were featured as supplements on many of their singles.
1998's ''Gran Turismo'' was less popular, and was followed by a long hiatus during which the band members pursued solo side projects (however, they did collaborate with Tom Jones for a track on his 1999 album ''Reload''). Nina Persson released an album as A Camp, Peter Svensson worked on the project Paus with help from Joachim Berg of Kent, and Magnus Sveningsson recorded as Righteous Boy. The

:My guess is it's a paper for somebody's high school music class. The grammar is bad, the spelling is bad; the formatting is poor. Either that or it's an amalgamation of slight rephrasings--there's a mixture of "smart" quotes and generic quotes and the content seems to draw heavily from http://thecardigans.olleprojects.net/articles/8/ this page. --Koyaanis Qatsi 21:44 Jan 23, 2003 (UTC)

Cardigan (Sweater) A cardigan is a type of sweater/jumper that opens down the front and can be attached with buttons or a zip. It was named after James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British military commander, during his service in the Crimean War. It is usually machine or hand knitted from wool. Cardigans are available for both sexes but recent fashions have resulted in them being more typically worn by women.

In 1790 the title ''Baron Brudenell of Deene'' merged with the earldom. The titles were inherited by the second Marquess of Ailesbury in 1868; the two titles have remained united since.

Cardigan, Ceredigion
Cardigan (Welsh: ''Aberteifi'') is the county town of Cardiganshire (Ceredigion) in west Wales.
The town, founded in 1093 by the Norman Roger de Montgomery, lies on the estuary of the River Teifi. Attractions in the town include the remains of Cardigan Castle, a heritage centre, arts centre and a currently under used nineteenth century guildhall.
In 1176 the castle became the site of the first competitive Eisteddfod. Cardigan also hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1942 and 1976. The castle was for many years in private hands and as a result became run down and derelict. The town council itself showed little interest in saving it. However a group of volunteers, and the local Catholic Priest, working separately did raise its profile. Ceredigion Council finally bought it in 2003.
By the early 19th century over 300 sailing vessels were registered at the port and more than 200 ships were built in the five shipyards. Cilgerran slate was exported from the port. The river silted up and the port died by the early part of the twentieth century. Plans to dredge it have come to naught over the years.
Cardigan is also the site of Wales' premier Roman Catholic Shrine in Wales. In pre-Reformation times it was known for a statue of the Virgin Mary, who held a candle whose flame never extinguished.
Cardigan is twinned with Brioude, France.
Cardigan Island lies offshore near the town.
