Chipper A chipper is an occassional tobacco smoker who isn't subject to the heavy level that is typical of addicted smokers. Such occassional users of tobacco are also dubbed ''social smokers'' which is similar in meaning to ''social drinker''. Chippers are given as an example in ''The Tipping Point''; if chippers begin smoking above a certain threshold (or tipping point), then they will develop regular cravings and become addicted.
This term is also used to refer to the occassional (or weekend) heroin user.
----
A chipper is also a device that mechanically breaks down a substance into small pieces (or chips). For instance, logs or branches can be fed into wood chippers to generate smaller chips. Chippers are also used to break up plastic bottles before recycling.
Chipper Jones
Larry Wayne Jones, Jr. (born April 24, 1972 in DeLand, Florida), better known as Chipper Jones, is a Major League Baseball third baseman.
Jones was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 1st round (1st pick) of the 1990 amateur draft. He made a quick jump through the minors to make his major league debut on September 11, 1993.
After sitting out the entire 1994 season with an ACL tear in his left knee, Jones came back strong in 1995, leading all major league rookies in RBI (86), games played (145), games started (123), plate appearances (602), at-bats (524), and runs scored (87). He eventually went on to win The Sporting News Rookie of the Year Award, and finished second in the BBWAA Rookie of the Year balloting.
In 1998, Jones was a subject of scandal due to his fathering of a child -- with a Hooters waitress, not his wife Karin.
In 1999, Jones won the National League MVP award after hit .319 with 45 home runs and 110 RBI. Jones led the Braves to the World Series against the New York Yankees that year, in which the Braves were swept. He did, however, hit their only home run in the series, against Yankees starter Orlando Hernandez.
Following the failure of the Braves to win the pennant the past two years, before the start of the 2002 season, Jones announced his willingness to move from third base to left field to make room for the incoming Vinny Castilla. Jones proved adequete in left field, but following two more early playoff exits in 2002 and 2003 and a hamstring pull in the early 2004 season, he moved back to his traditional third base.
In an 11-season career Jones is a .304 hitter with 310 home runs and 1039 RBI in 1542 games. Today, he is considered one of the game's best all-around hitters.
Jones has emerged as a team leader in recent years and is well-respected in the clubhouse.
Milestone
On August 16, 2004 Jones hit the 300th home run of his career in a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres.

Tree Chipper A tree chipper (sometimes, ''wood chipper'') is a machine used for reducing wood (generally tree limbs or trunks) to chips. They are often portable, being mounted on wheels on frames suitable for towing behind a truck or van. Power is generally provided by a gasoline engine from 3 to 20 horsepower (2 to 15 kW).
They are typically made of a hopper with a collar, the chipper mechanism itself, and a collection bin for the chips. A downed tree limb is inserted into the hopper (the collar serving as a partial safety mechanism to keep human body parts away from the chipping blades) and started into the chipping mechanism. This usually is designed to pull the remainder of the limb into the chipper. Typical output is chips on the order of 3 or 4 inches (75 to 100 mm) in size. The chipping mechanism is usually a rotating flail type with several sharp metal blades.
A famous (or infamous, depending on one's perspective) use of a tree chipper is the scene in the Joel and Ethan Coen movie ''Fargo'' in which a tree chipper is used to dispose of a body. The movie is dramatic, but tree chippers are actually quite dangerous. They should be used only by careful adults who have been thoroughly checked out on their safe use.
The resulting wood chips have various uses such as being spread as a ground cover or being fed into a digester during papermaking.

Tree Chipper Personally, I've never heard of "tree chipper" before. In my experience, "wood chipper" is the more common term. If others agree, then "sometimes wood chipper" should be changed to "or wood chipper". WpZurp 05:31, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
I guess the distinction is a usage one. One is an outdoor device used by folks for limbs and branches and such, and the other is anything that produces wood chips. But I agree the distinction in not one the is hard and fast, if anything in language use can be so. I'd be happy with either. ww 22:52, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
