Beaded Lamp Shades

Bead

A bead is a small, decorative object that is pierced for threading or stringing. Beads range in size from under a millimeter to over a centimeter. Glass, plastic, and stone are probably the most common materials, but beads are also made from the seeds of the Bead tree, and also from bone, metal, resin, wood, clay, felt, paper, and other materials. Beadwork is the craft of making things with beads. Types of beads include:
  • Lampwork beads
  • Anal beads
  • Baily's beads
  • Chevrons
  • Fire-polish beads
  • Millefiori
  • Pressed glass beads
  • Seed beads
  • Slave beads

    Seed Beads

Seed beads are uniformly shaped, spheroidal beads ranging in size from under a millimetre to several millimetres.

    Units of measure

The most popular seed bead size is 11/0 ("eleven-aught"), but sizes range from 22/0 (believed to be the smallest) to 6/0 or 5/0 (the largest). The term "aught" refers to how many beads can fit into a standard unit. The origin of the name is debatable. Size numbers are also used. Unfortunately online verdors will typically not explain the correlation between size numbers and aughts and millimeters. Insert non-formatted text hereInsert non-formatted text here

    Bead Stringing

Bead stringing is the putting of beads on string. It can range from simply sliding a single bead onto any thread-like medium (string, silk thread, leather thong, thin wire, multi-strand beading wire) to complex creations that have multiple strands or interwoven levels. The choice of stringing medium can be an important point in the overall design, since string-type mediums might be subject to unwanted stretching if the weight of the beads is considerable. Similarly, certain bead types with sharp edges, such as hollow metal beads or some varieties of stone or glass, might abrade string and cause the strand to eventually break. The simplest design would be a single bead centered as a focal point on the string medium. The ends of the string could be simply knotted together or components of a clasp might be attached to each end. Next in complexity would be stringing multiple beads onto a single strand. Here alone are numerous opportunities for adding elements to the design concept. All the beads might be identical. The beads might be varied (in shape, color, type or any combination thereof) and used either in a random assortment or in a deliberate repeating pattern. Items not strictly defined as beads, such as pendants or "drops", might be placed within the strand to serve as focal points or accent elements in the design. Knotting is a next level of proficiency in creating strands. Here the stringing medium (traditionally silk thread or another similar, synthetic medium) has knots tied into it as a means of separating the individual beads from each other. The traditional strand of pearls is a well-known example of this technique. Pearls are threaded onto silk, and a knot is tied between each one to not only space them for greater individual prominence but to also keep them from rubbing directly against each other and risking the abrasion of the nacre that gives them their luster. This classic design can be varied by adding or using other varieties

    Captive Bead

: A captive bead ring or CBR (also ''ball closure ring'' or less frequently ''captive ball ring'') is a common example of body piercing jewelry.
The captive bead or ball fits into a small opening in the circle of the ring. The bead is slightly larger than this opening and has small indentations or depressions that correspond to the ring's end-points so that it may fit snugly against them, thus completing the circuit of the ring. Often, a hole is drilled through the bead to allow easier fitting.
It utilizes the natural tensile or compressive strength of the metal the ring is made of, usually surgical stainless steel, niobium or titanium to hold the bead tightly in place. The bead or ball itself may additionally be made from coloured glass or ceramic, or some (semi-) precious stone.
This is a popular piece of body jewelry because it conveniently allows the wearer to remove the ring by simply removing the captive bead, yet the bead is held so firmly in place that it will not easily fall out. Additionally, because of their closed shape and rounded edges, these rings do not easily snag on clothing, hair or furniture, making them a popular choice for piercings which are still healing.

    Baily'S Beads

As the moon "grazes" by the Sun during the eclipse, the rugged lunar limb topography allows beads of sunlight to shine through. This effect is called ''Baily's Beads'', named in honor of Francis Baily who first noted the phenomenon in 1836. The lunar topography is non-smooth (mountains, craters, valleys, etc.). The lunar limb profile is also known accurately from grazing occultations of stars. So in advance of the eclipse we have a fairly good idea which mountains and valleys will cause the beads to appear. While Baily's Beads are briefly seen for a few seconds at the central path of the eclipse, their effect is maximized near the eclipse limits to 1-2 minutes.
