Forestry

Forestry is the art, science, and practice of studying and managing forests and plantations, and related natural resources. Silviculture, a related science, involves the growing and tending of trees and forests. Modern forestry generally concerns itself with assisting forests to provide timber as raw material for wood products; wildlife habitat; natural water quality regulation; recreation; landscape and community protection; employment; aesthetically appealing landscapes; and a 'sink' for atmospheric carbon dioxide. A practitioner of forestry is known as a forester. Forests have come to be seen as one of the most important components of the biosphere, and foresty has emerged as a vital field of science, applied art, and technology.

What foresters do

Foresters may be employed by industry, government agencies, conservation groups, urban parks boards, citizens' associations, or private landowners. Historically, foresters have been predominantly involved in planning the harvest of timber and the regeneration of new trees. Typically, professional foresters develop "forest management plans". These plans rely on tree inventories showing an area's topographical features as well as its distribution of trees (by species) and other plant cover. They also include roads, culverts, proximity to human habitation, hydrological conditions, and soil reports. Finally, forest management plans include the projected use of the land and a timetable for that use. Plans for harvest and subsequent site treatment are influenced by the objectives of the land's owner or leaseholder (for instance, a timber company that holds cutting rights to a given tract of land, or the government in the case of state-owned forests). There is an increasing trend to consider the needs of other stakeholders (e.g., nearby communities or neighborhoods, or rural residents living within or adjacent to the forest tract), through public consultation. Plans are developed with the prevailing forest

    Fraternal Forestry

Fraternal Forestry is a term for a movement of fraternal organizations (or friendly societies) marked by a confusing history of merger, separation and charitable activity throughout Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. The origins of the movement are unclear, and the Foresters' claim to be descended from so-called Friendly Societies of Thirteenth Century England is almost certainly an exaggeration. But by 1790 the Court of the Ancient Order of Foresters was in existence in England. North American Forestry declared themselves independent from the British organization in 1874, forming the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF). As a self-help organization, Forestry has a long tradition of selling insurance and financial instruments to its members. Many of the mergers with other organizations might been seen as business acquisitions. In 1926 the Ancient Order of United Workmen and the Canadian Order of Home Circles were subsumed into Forestry. In 1931 both the Royal Templars of Temperance and the Modern Brotherhood of America became part of the movement. 1971 saw the Order of Scottish Clans merged with the IOF.

    Sustainable Forestry

Sustainable forestry - often relates to natural cover and forest where seed trees are left for natural regeneration. There is often powerful argument as to what is truly sustainable. The other aspect is that usually the question of sustainability is the looking in a very narrow sense at just the timber resource - the complex ecology of the forest and its systems is usually ignored. The sensitive ecosystems are not all about the tall trees but rather the whole mosaic of forest entities.

    Urban Forestry

Urban forestry is the care and management of tree populations in urban settings for the purpose of improving the urban environment. Urban forestry advocates the role of trees as a critical part of the urban infrastructure. Urban foresters plant and maintain trees, support appropriate tree and forest preservation, conduct research and promote the many benefits trees provide. Urban forestry is practiced by municipal and commercial arborists, municipal and utility foresters, environmental policymakers, city planners, consultants, educators, researchers and community activists.

    Challenges of Urban Forestry

Urban forestry is a practical discipline, focused on tree planting, care, and protection. Ongoing care and intervention are required because trees are constantly challenged by the urban environment. Water may not be readily available; planters may limit root space and consequently limit growth; ordinary physical stresses such as touching can accumulate to cause substantial damage.

    Benefits of Urban Forestry

However, the benefits of urban trees are many, including beautification, reduction of the urban heat island effect, reduction of stormwater runoff, reduction of air pollution, reduction of energy costs through increased shade over buildings, enhancement of property values, improved wildlife habitiat, and mitigation of overall urban environmental impact.

Urban Forestry in the United States

In the United States, federal urban forestry policy is overseen by the USDA Forest Service, part of the Department of Agriculture. Much of the work on the ground is performed by non-profits funded by private donations and government grants. Policy on urban forestry is less contentious and partisan than many other forestry issues, such as resource extraction in national forests.

    ----

    Saskatchewan Forest Centre

---- Established due to need of enhancing knowledge base for the forest sector in Saskatchewan, the forestry centre was established as a non-profit organization in 2001. The Board of Directors consists of industry representatives, government agencies, and Aboriginal groups involved in forest development. This project is funded by several provincial and federal government agencies (Federal based funding: Natural Resources Canada (Canadian Forest Service), Western Economic Diversification Canada)(Provincial based funding: Industry and Resources, Environment, Agriculture, Food and Rural Revitalization). There are several units that communicate and help give the Saskatchewan Forest Centre its knowledge and information. These units are attached to other partners to achieve the maximization of knowledge base, both units and partners are as follows: Value Added Unit: Partnership with ''Forintek Canada Corporation'' Fire/Forest Ecosystems Unit: Partnership with ''GeoSpatial Consulting Inc.'' and ''Forest Enigneering Research Institute of Canada'' (FERIC) Agroforestry Unit: Partnership with ''Canadian Forest Service's'' (''Natural Resources Canada'') Forest Information Centre Unit: Partnership with ''Sask. Environment'' Niche Opportunities Unit: has no partnerships, ran solely by Saskacthewan Forestry Centre Each of these units communicate together with the Saskatchewan Forestry Centre, upon which the information is sent to the Chief Executive Officer, and then to the Board of Directors. This system allows a comprehensive source to information, needs, and other primary considerations, that can be funneled to the Board of Directors to use with majour decisions. The newly formed organization of the Saskatchewan Forestry Centre shown above has made a couple new developments already. Two new developments are the SFC Forest Resource Centre and the SFC Virtual Data Warehouse. The Virtual Data Warehouse
