Jaipur

Jaipur (जयपुर), also popularly known as the Pink City, historically sometimes rendered as Jeypore, is the capital of Rajasthan state, India. Jaipur is also the capital of Jaipur District. Jaipur is the former capital of a princely state of the same name. The city was founded in 1728 by Maharaja Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amber. The population in 2003 was approximately 2.7 million. The city was built of pink stucco in imitation of sandstone, and is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets. The city is laid out into six quarters, separated by broad streets 111 ft. wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of gridded streets. Five quarters wrap around the east, south, and west sides of a central palace quarter, with a sixth quarter immediately to the east. The Palace quarter encloses a sprawling palace complex (the Hawa Mahal, or palace of winds), formal gardens, and a small lake. A fort crowns the hill in the northwest corner of the old city. During the British Raj, Jaipur was the capital of a princely state of the same name, ruled by the Rajput Maharajas of the Kachwaha clan. In the 19th century the city grew rapidly and became prosperous, with a population of 160,000 in 1900, and the City's wide boulevards were paved and lit with gas. Its chief industries were in metals and marble, which are fostered by a school of art, founded in 1868. There was also a wealthy and enterprising community of native bankers. The city had three colleges and several hospitals. Jaipur state which existed from the twelfth century until Indian Independence in 1947, took its name from the city. Perfume

:''For the book "Perfume" by Patrick Süskind, see Perfume (book).'' Perfume is a mixture of fragrant essential oils and aroma compounds, a fixative, and alcohol used to give parts of the human body and sometimes other objects a long-lasting and pleasant smell. The essential oils are obtained by distillation of flowers, plants, and grasses, such as orange blossom and roses. Extraction by enfleurage is used if distillation is not possible, for example in the case of Jasmin Absolute. Enfleurage is basically extraction by absorption of aroma materials into wax and then extracting the odorous oil with alcohol. Aromatic chemicals are also used. Fixatives, which bind the various fragrances together, include balsams, ambergris, and secretions from the scent glands of civets and musk deer (undiluted these have unpleasant smells but in alcoholic solution they act as preserving agents). The amount of alcohol added depends on whether perfumes, Eaux de toilette, or Eaux de Cologne are required. The mixture is normally aged for one year.

Eau de toilette: 5-10% aromatic compounds

Eau de cologne: 2-3% aromatic compounds A mixture of alcohol and water are used as the solvent for the aromatics. On application, body heat causes the solvent to evaporate quickly, leaving the fragrance to evaporate gradually over several hours. The rate of evaporation(vapor pressure) and the odor strength of the compound partly determines the tenaciousness of the compound and determines it perfume note classification.

The Perfumed Garden

''The Perfumed Garden'' by Sheikh Nefzaoui is a sex manual and work of erotic literature. The full title of the book is ''The Perfumed Garden for the Soul's Recreation'' (''Er Roud el Âater p'nezaha el Khater''). The name of the Sheikh has become known to posterity as the author of this work, which is the only one attributed to him. The book was translated into English in 1886 by Sir Richard Burton. According to Burton, from the historical notice contained in the first leaves of the manuscript, and notwithstanding the apparent error respecting the name of the Bey who was reigning in Tunis, it may be presumed that this work was written in the beginning of the sixteenth century, about the year 925 of the Hegira. As regards the birthplace of the author, it can be deduced from his name, considering the Arab naming practice of joining the name of their birth-place to their own, that he was born at Nefzaoua, a town situated in the district of that name on the shore of the lake Sebkha Melrir, in the south of the kingdom of Tunis. The Sheikh himself records that he lived in Tunis, and it is most probable the book was written in that city. According to tradition, a particular motive induced him to undertake a work entirely at variance with his simple tastes and retired habits. Burton mentions that he considers that ''The Perfumed Garden'' can be compared with the works of Aretin and Rabelais, of the book ''Conjugal Love''. But what he believes makes the ''Perfumed Garden'' unique as a book of its kind is "the seriousness with which the most lascivious and obscene matters are presented". Burton points out that not all of the ideas in the ''Perfumed Garden'' are original.
